Persistent Organic Pollutants

OOccupant Health & Exposure

About This Health Driver

Persistent organic pollutants are synthetic compounds that resist environmental degradation, bioaccumulate in living tissue, and biomagnify through food chains. In residential settings, the relevant subcategories are PFAS (used in non-stick coatings, stain-resistant treatments, water-repellent finishes, some food packaging, and firefighting foam), PCBs (legacy contaminants still present in older building materials, caulking, and electrical equipment), and their hydroxylated metabolites.

How It Affects Bodies

POPs accumulate in adipose tissue, liver, and blood. PFAS are immunotoxic: they alter T-cell differentiation, reduce antibody response to vaccination, and disrupt immune regulatory pathways. PCBs are neurotoxic and endocrine-disrupting. Hydroxylated metabolites of both classes are biologically active and may be more potent than parent compounds in some pathways. Chronic low-level exposure maintains sustained immune perturbation, which in genetically predisposed individuals may contribute to autoimmune activation.

Where It Comes From

  • Non-stick cookware - PFAS-based coatings (PTFE)
  • Stain-resistant textile treatments - PFAS applied to carpet, upholstery, curtains, and clothing
  • Water-repellent finishes - PFAS in outdoor clothing, furniture, and building materials
  • Contaminated drinking water - PFAS from industrial contamination, firefighting foam, wastewater
  • Legacy PCB-containing materials - caulking, ballasts, and insulation in pre-1980 buildings
  • Food contact packaging - PFAS in microwave popcorn bags, fast food wrappers, some paper products

How to Address It

  • PFAS-free material specification - no stain-resistant treatments on any textiles or surfacesInteriors
  • Non-PFAS cookware - stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic; operating manual specificationOperations
  • Whole-house PFAS filtration - activated carbon or reverse osmosis, NSF-certifiedPlumbing
  • Source water testing - annual PFAS panel, particularly in areas with known contaminationOperations
  • Legacy PCB remediation - professional removal of PCB-containing caulking and materials in pre-1980 buildingsEnvelope
  • Glass and steel food storage - eliminate PFAS-containing food contact materialsOperations
